Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the final draft of the 27th Amendment in the Senate, where each clause was approved one by one. Earlier, the National Assembly had also passed the amendment with more than the required majority, with 234 members voting in favor. However, JUI-F opposed the bill.

The 27th Amendment includes eight new changes. These changes modify Article 6, Clause 2, ensuring that no act of high treason can be justified by any court, including the High Court, Supreme Court, or the newly added Constitutional Court. It also defines that the current Chief Justice will remain in office until the end of his term, and afterward, the senior-most judge from either the Supreme Court or the Federal Constitutional Court will serve as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
